Eugene Talmadge “Ted” Smith, 88, of Homerville passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Clinch Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Homerville to the late Herbert Smith and Mary Elizabeth Taylor Smith Brinkley. Mr. Smith was named after Governor Herman Eugene Talmadge as he was in town on the day he was born. Papa Ted or Uncle Ted as he was known throughout the community was a member of New Vision Church of God, always enjoyed fishing, hunting quail, dove, and squirrels. He was self-employed as a plumber and carpenter for many years.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shelby Touchton Smith; second wife, Ruth Willoughby Smith; his stepfather, Cicero Brinkley; three brothers, Phillip Brinkley, Roy Gay Brinkley, and J.D. Smith; two sisters, Domma Johnson and Gloria Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Register Smith of Homerville; two daughters, Dana Peeples (Buddy) of Lakeland, FL, Susan Smith Bennett of Homerville; two sons, Carl Smith (Debbie) of Homerville, Wyman Smith (Gail) of Homerville; special sons, Raymond Touchton (Linda) of Dallas, GA, and Curtis Peterson of Homerville; five step children, Carol Chambers (Tommy), Bo Willoughby, all of Homerville, Dewey Wendall Sutton (Warnett) of Vidalia, GA, Georgia, George Jackson Sutton (Jackie) of Fargo, Julia Lafaye Scott of Fargo; one brother, Herman Lee Brinkley (Betty) of Lake City, FL; eight grandchildren, Samantha Corbitt (Timmy) of Fargo, Emily Corbitt (Brandon) of Homerville, Hannah Bennett Bradley (David) of Worth County, Matthew Bennett of Worth County, Erick Smith (Jami Lee) of Homerville, Danny Smith of Ware County, Mark Peeples of Lakeland, FL, Michael Peeples (Kate) of Lakeland, FL; twenty great-grandchildren, Dalton, Talmadge, Devin, Jacob, Chelsea, Levi, Shelby, and Grace Corbitt, Emma Jean and Ella Ann Bradley, Jaylee and Aleece Pearson, JD, Sadie Jo, Mackencie, and Wyatt Smith, Ansley, Jackson, Riley, and Jase Peeples; seven step-grandchildren, Wendy Elaine Swinson, David Lee Sutton, Jesse Christopher Sutton, Brenda Gail Altman, Victoria Michelle Lankford, Justin Ray Briley, and Joshua Charles Scott; several step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Due to Covid, a funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm “Outdoors” at New Vision Church of God. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.
