Sterling C. Newton, Sr., 86, of Homerville passed away Sunday evening, January 1, 2023, at Fellowship Home in Valdosta after a short illness. He was born to Beatrice Pope Newton and Marvin Earl Newton in Greenville, AL, July 8, 1936.
Mr. Newton graduated from Greenville High School, Southern Union College, and Troy State University, all located in Alabama, where he played football, basketball, and baseball and was captain of all three teams. He was an educator with thirty-six years of experience, mainly in school administration in Clinch County where he and his family made their home.
Mr. Newton was a member and officer in the Bob Dickerson Hunting Club and the Lake Verne Hunting and Fishing Club. He served as President of the Clinch Retired Association of Education and belonged to the Lions Club in Homerville, and to the Homerville United Methodist Church where he ushered. In Mayo, FL, he was President of the Mayo Men’s Club at church. He coached Little League when his boys were young.
Along with his parents, Mr. Newton was preceded in death by a sister, Myrlene Philpot and two brothers, Earl Newton and William Newton.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Frances Newton; sons, Lane Newton (Mandi) of Cumming, GA, Clark Newton (Andrea) of Augusta, GA, Jim Newton (Kacy) of Homerville; daughters, Karan Magee (Bob), Naples, FL, Kelly Hennessy, (Tony) of Chattanooga, TN; four sisters, Delane Whittle, Alice Faye Mullins, Jean Thompson (Jake), and Linda Black; ten grandchildren, Trey Newton (Megan), Will Newton (Abbey), Rob Newton (Emily), Tess Newton, Natalie Newton, Haley Newton, Sterling A. Newton, Alex Newton, Michael Norton, and Dane Sims; four great-grandchildren, Michael Norton, III, Emma Eason (Micah), Jackson Newton, and Annie Newton; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2023, beginning at 2 pm at Homerville United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2023, at 3 pm at Homerville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Cemetery.
