Sarah Ella Hughes Lutz was born in Clinch County on June 19, 1936, to the late Matthew Gordon Hughes and Ora Lee Johnson Hughes Register Jones. She was educated in Clinch County and graduated Valedictorian from Clinch County High School in 1954. After high school, she attended the University of Georgia Off-Campus Center in Waycross, Georgia. As a young woman, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a secretary to the late Congresswoman Iris Faircloth Blitch. When she returned to Homerville, she worked for many years at Standard Container Company (now Mauser) where she met her husband, Heinz. Sarah and Heinz married in 1962 and were married for 41 years until his death. During their marriage, they had two sons, Karl Gordon and Eric Garland. Sarah was elected the first female member of the Clinch County Board of Education, a position she held for eight years. She was an active and faithful member of the Homerville United Methodist Church and held many positions in the church throughout her life. She was most proud of her service on the Administrative Council and as the Treasurer of the United Methodist Women.
Sarah was the widow of Heinz Karl Lutz and was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Morris Franklin Hughes and Osie Math Hughes.
She is survived by two sons, Karl Gordon Lutz (Kristi), of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Eric Garland Lutz of Dupont; four grandchildren, Garland Daniels (Bryce), Duncan Lutz, Sadie Lutz, and Jake Lutz; one sister, Elaine Hughes Hendley (Nass) of Homerville.
A funeral service will be held Monday morning, September 2, 2024, at 11 am at the Homerville United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Carter officiating. Burial will follow in North Cemetery with Rev. James Davis officiating.
The family requests the Red Hatters to serve as Honorary Pallbearers and should meet at the church by 10:30 Monday morning for the service.
