Phyllis Smith Shirley, 83, of Homerville passed away Thursday afternoon, August 15, 2024, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born in Homerville to the late Dolphes and Ruby Lee Bell Allen Smith and lived here all of her life. Mrs. Shirley was a graduate of Clinch County High School and a member of the New Vision Church of God. She worked many years at Harper Drug Store and Clinch Memorial Hospital as an office clerk. Mrs. Shirley always enjoyed sewing and reading.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Billy” Shirley; grandson, Lee McGowan; one brother, Dolphes Smith, Jr.; one sister, Kay McIntyre.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Daphene and Jerry Altman of Homerville, Carmene and Terry McGowan of Mims, FL; three grandchildren, Chip Altman (wife Gail) of Fargo, Jamie McGowan of Mims, FL, and Heather Chamberlain (husband Chad) of Yulee, FL; twelve great-grandchildren, Macey Altman, Morgan Altman, Drake Altman, Halee Hillis (Dalton), Kade McGowan, Kolton McGowan, Koral McGowan, Kaylin McGowan, Ella McGowan, Charlee McGowan, Isabella Chamberlain, and Ally Chamberlain; two brothers, Ronnie Smith of Valdosta, Butch Smith (wife Gail) of Homerville; one sister, Shelba Catterton of Charleston, SC; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held Monday morning, August 19, 2024, at 11 am at Shiloh Church with Pastor W.G. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10 until 11 am at the church.
