Matt Courson

July 2, 1973 — March 12, 2022

Michael Matthew Courson, 48, of Echols County passed away Saturday, March 12, 2022, at his residence after an illness. He was born in Valdosta and graduated from Echols County High School in 1991. Mr. Courson graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 1993 with a degree in Forestry. He worked for Champion and Superior Pine then for Superior Berries and Okefenokee Berry Center. He was now self-employed as the owner and operator of Courson Farms in Clinch County. Mr. Courson attended First Baptist Church in Homerville and previously served on the board of the Blueberry Growers Association. He always loved to have a good time and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Michael Courson; stepfather, Zeke Cumbess; maternal grandparents, Chester and Louise Rineer; paternal grandparents, Nadine and Guybo Chambers, and Carlton Courson.

Survivors include his wife, DeAnna Strickland Courson; two children, Madilyn Elizabeth Courson and John Michael Courson; his mother, Cindy Courson Cumbess of Echols County; one sister, Lisa Corbett (Steve) and their children, Colby and Emily Corbett and their daughter, Collins of Valdosta, Taylor and Brittney Corbett and their son, Tony of Echols County; one brother, Randy Courson (Mary) and their children, Maci Courson, and Paul Courson of Echols County; two step-brothers, Timmy Cumbess (Michelle)  of Lake Park, GA, and Zakk Cumbess (Tiffany) of Jacksonville, FL; two step-sisters, Sherae McMasters (Chris) of Echols County, and Julie Cumbess of Savannah; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wink and Nancy Strickland of Homerville; sister-in-law, Amy and Craig Hunt and their children, Sam and Caroline of Greenville, SC, brother-in-law, John and Heidi Strickland and their daughter Allenee of Homerville, brother-in-law, Stephen and April Tinsley of Homerville. 

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 6 pm at First Baptist Church in Homerville.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 until 5:45 pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch, 5671 Boys Ranch Rd., Hahira, GA 31632.
