Myrl Baxter Brown, 84, of Homerville, Ga., died Monday, June 6, 2011, at Clinch Memorial Hospital in Homerville, Ga. The youngest of seven children, she was born to the late Hurder and Lizzie Baxter of Glennville, Ga., on Nov. 7, 1926, and graduated from Glennville High School in 1943. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1947. After college, Ms. Brown moved to Lake Butler, Fla., where she was an educator at Union County High School. While there, she met and married Wilbur L. Brown. Most recently, she had lived in Homerville for more than 20 years. She was a dedicated teacher, at home, in school, her church and in life. Ms. Brown was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Homerville, Ga., where she taught Sunday School classes for many years until her death. She was actively involved in the church's Women's Missionary Union as well as other ministries. Ms. Brown was also a member of the Clinch Retired Educators Association. She was preceded in death by her husband and sons Wilbur L. "Bill" Brown Jr. and Ray C. Brown. Affectionately known as "Mema" to many friends and family alike, she is survived by one brother, Barnie Baxter, of Glennville, Ga.; her daughter, Beverly Brown Cook and husband Phillip, of Homerville, Ga.; her son Jim W. Brown and wife LaRae, of Dahlonega, Ga.; and her daughter-in-law Louise M. Brown, of Brooker, Fla. Other survivors include grandchildren Denise Cook, Hiawassee, Ga.; Derek Cook, Macon, Ga.; Julie Brown Dukes, Fleming Island, Fla.; Jon W. Brown, Lake Butler, Fla.; Michael L. Brown and wife Suzy, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Patti Brown Crosby and husband Eddie, Brooker, Fla.; Penny Brown Colee and husband Sterling, St. Augustine, Fla.; Sherri Brown Jackson and husband Al, Jacksonville, Fla.; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at First Baptist Church, Homerville, Ga. Interment will follow at 5 p.m. at Elzey Chapel Cemetery, Lake Butler, Fla. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 7, 2011, 6-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Homerville, Ga. Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 497, Homerville, Ga. 31634.
